What is a traumatic brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a dysfunction of the brain caused by an external force, such as a violent blow or jolt to head or body. These injuries can also be the result of an object that penetrates the skull, such as a bullet, a projectile from an explosion, or a piece of the skull itself.

A TBI may be mild or severe. A mild TBI may be a concussion that results in a brief change of mental status or consciousness. On the other hand, a severe TBI involves an extended period of unconsciousness as well as possible amnesia. TBIs are also classified as open or closed. An open TBI occurs when the skull is fractured as a result of a fall, collision, or violent contact from a hard object.  A closed TBI is the result of a blow to the head or a sudden jolt that causes the brain to knock against the skull, which can lead to brain swelling and blood clots.

In either case, a TBI can affect a victim's cognitive functioning, and result in a loss of attention and memory. These injuries can also cause weakness in the extremities as well as loss of coordination and balance. Some victims may suffer hearing and vision loss, while others may show signs of personality changes, including impulsive behavior, anxiety and depression.

What are the symptoms of TBI?

Common symptoms of a TBI include:

  • Headache

  • Memory loss

  • Light-headedness

  • Blurred vision

  • Sensitivity to light or sound

  • Confusion

  • Sleep problems
